PARENT NEWSLETTER--SEPTEMBER 2009

TEACHING AND LEARNING

MONTHLY THEME

This month, students will continue their study of Latino history and art in honor of Latino Heritage Month. The children will participate in various art projects and activities that incorporate color recognition, visual art, art devices and methods. They will be introduced to new vocabulary associated with visual art and Latino culture. Students will also begin a 90% Spanish Immersion program starting on September 21, 2009. The children will review a new Spanish vocabulary word each week, along with the number, letter, shape and color.

The children will review the scientific method and learn about photosynthesis. They will participate in growing a classroom plant pet! The children will discuss weather patterns and seasons--Fall equinox and decorate their favorite stone in honor of Grandparent Day! Lastly, the children will participate in the monthly parent participation field trip to the Oakland Zoo.

LESSON PLAN

Week of September 1---Learning about photosynthesis: Without enough sunlight, plants cannot use the process of photosynthesis to produce food. To prove that fact, students should select a tree leaf or the leaf of a houseplant. Cover part of that leaf (up to half of it) with a piece of cardboard or foil. Wait at least a few days, then remove the cardboard or foil. What happened? What does that prove? (For complete details and follow-up questions, check the Photosynthesis Activity from Newton's Apple. The activity includes a student activity page.), color recognition and mixing, explore art tools and methods

Week of September 28---Introduce seasons and Fall Equinox: Why are there seasons? What is the weather like during the different seasons? When you go to bed in the summer, is it light or dark outside? When you go to bed in the winter, is it light or dark outside? Gather a globe, a flashlight, and a few other common materials to set up an activity that will demonstrate that seasons exist because of the tilt of Earth and its impact on the intensity of the sunlight at a given location. REMINDERS

1. We encourage parents to read a short book to their child during drop-off each morning (if
not doing so already). Not only will this important activity support a smoother morning transition for your child, but you will also experience additional bonding time, while all in the same, promoting literacy development. Thank you.

2. In trying to maintain open communication with parents, we will begin a student observation log. Parents are encouraged to read and write inside the notebook daily (possible illness, mood, any special requests). Parents may write down comments about their child’s sleeping pattern and diet the night before and the morning of care. Parents will also have the opportunity to check the white board, located in the school hallway for parent announcements and reminders. However, parents are responsible for reading the monthly parent newsletter posted on our school blog. The newsletter was developed with the intention of maintaining a strong school to home connection. Thank you.

3. We are currently enrolling P-T and F-T students for the upcoming school year and need your help. Please assist us in spreading the word about our school success by sharing your school experience with friends, coworkers and neighbors. PPLA is offering an ‘Appreciation
Stipend’ worth $100.00 per family for every referred child who enrolls in our school. Thank you for your time and support.

4. *PPLA caters to working families who are in need of care until 5:30pm, M-F and therefore
our official closing time is 5:30pm, M-F. However, not all parents are in need of full daycare and must pick-up their student by their individualized sign-up time (please see enrollment contract for details). As a reminder, we encourage parents to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled pick-up time, in order to check-in with teachers, child and clear student cubby, and art pocket. Thank you and we hope this clarifies any pending questions and/or concerns that you may have.

5. We are asking for your assistance in maintaining a stimulating school experience for our
