Parent Newsletter--April 2009


MONTHLY THEME

This month students will learn about animal kingdoms and pets. The children will read about animal behavior, characteristics and natural habitat, as well as observe pets in motion outdoors. There will be a documentary showing (short video on laptop) to follow up with prior readings and projects. Students will compare and contrast the characteristics of spiders, crocodiles and gorillas, to that of other animal kingdoms (i.e. humans). In addition, students will participate in daily Language Arts and Mathematics activities that incorporate the letter, shape, color and number of the week.

LESSON PLAN

Week of March 30—Students will finish their Cesar Chavez art projects (masks) and neighborhood writing activity (collage). Students will watch a short documentary about Cesar Chavez’s upbringing, cultivation of fruits and vegetables, and justice.

Week of April 6­­ —Students will learn about the characteristics of Arachnids (Tarantula). Students will create a Tarantula out of egg cartons and other materials. Students will learn how to take care of Spiders as pets and conduct observations of outdoor spiders. The children will participate in various activities and exercises that incorporate the color, shape, number and letter of the week (Nn, Ivory, Cylinder, #14).

Week of April 13—SPRING BREAK! Students will participate in a writing activity and discuss the highlight of their spring break vacation. Students will discuss Earth Day (the ways in which we can preserve wild life) and Easter festivities (egg decor). The children will participate in various activities and exercises that incorporate the color, shape, number and letter of the week (Oo, Lavender, oval, #15).

Week of April 20— Students will learn about Reptiles (Crocodile) and discuss their ancestry to dinosaurs (Allosaurus). Students will participate in readings about Crocodiles and write stories about their favorite crocodile characteristic. Students will celebrate, day of the child (el dia del nino) with music, games and song. Students will participate in show and tell on Friday, April 24 (children may bring in their favorite animal to class--via picture, stuffed animal, etc.). The children will participate in various activities and exercises that incorporate the color, shape, number and letter of the week (Pp, Lime, Triangular Prism, #16).

Week of April 27—lastly, students will learn about Gorillas and primate characteristics. We will discuss the characteristics of Apes versus Monkeys and humans. Students will participate in various activities and exercises that incorporate the color, shape, number and letter of the week (Qq, Salmon, Cube, #17).

ANNOUNCEMENTS

B. Back by popular demand, ‘show and tell’ will take place on the third Friday of each month. Students are encouraged to bring in an item that relates to the monthly theme.

C. Starting June 1, 2009, PPLA will no longer offer extended care after 5:30pm. Based on parent request and availability, extended care may be offered Monday-Friday, starting at 7:30am (an additional tuition fee is applied to your total monthly tuition payment--please see tuition schedule for details).

D. Ms. Magdalena is our newest bilingual Teachers Assistant. She has extensive experience working with children as a tutor and caregiver. Ms. Magdalena is pursuing a degree in Physical Therapy and currently in the process of obtaining a teaching permit.

E. Ms. Marta (our new parent) will be conducting gardening sessions every Thursday with the students. Students will participate in both indoor and outdoor gardening projects where students will learn to handle gardening tools, soil, seeds, water and observe plant growth.

F. We have three new students staring care this week—please welcome Karen (3 years old), Christopher (20 mo.) and Diego (3 years old)!

G. *In order to keep a safe atmosphere for our students we ask that only adults handle doors and light switches at all times. As a precaution measure we ask that parents maintain all school doors and gates closed at all times. In addition, we ask parents, relatives and visitors to leave shoes and large personal items on the front porch area. All hand bags (purses) must be hung on front door hooks or placed behind the child safety gate at the foot of the staircase. Thank you for your continued support!

H. PPLA seeks parent volunteers for our summer program starting in June. If you have a special talent and/or skill and would like to share with the children, please contact Cynthia.

I. We are asking for your assistance in maintaining a stimulating school experience for our children. Due to our limited funds, we are asking parents to donate what they can from the list of items below. We appreciate your commitment to the program and value your support and understanding in these harsh economic times. Thank you!

1. *Standard size Classroom books (topics: recycling, solar system, historical figures, ethnic books, etc.)
2. 2 used crib mattress (used for indoor tumbling during rainy weather)
3. *4-6 Outdoor Tonka Dump Trucks
4. *Outdoor large sea animals
5. *Outdoor storage cabinet
6. Indoor costumes (no weapons attached, please!)
7. *Imaginative play furniture—table and chairs, washer and dryer, etc. (to add to mini refrigerator, sink and microwave)
8. *2 outdoor eating benches (for outdoor activities and indoor eating)
9. Classroom art project trays (12)
10. 6 Classroom storage baskets (i.e. baskets used to store small blocks, etc.)
11. Building blocks (all kinds)
12. *2 water/sand tables
13. School gate (to replace pre-excising gate on the side of the house) and installation

REMINDERS

1. PPLA will be closed from April 13-15 for Spring Break!
2. Our first parent participation field trip of the year will be to the Chabot Space Center. This event will take place on Sunday, May 10 at 9am. This event is free.
