TEACHING AND LEARNING
MONTHLY THEME
This month we will continue our discussion on African American history and finish thank you cards. The children will read about Rosa Parks and discuss the historical accomplishments of our historical leader.
Students will discuss their home life and daily routines, as well as provide a show and tell item that best represents their neighborhood. The children will create a 'trash city' made out of recyclable items (students are encouraged to bring recyclable items for their project) by making a personal replica of their home, school, etc. Students will review geography and take nature walks to further explore and experience their school neighborhood. Children will read about the ways in which we can clean up our streets of pollution (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
Students will participate in recycling activities, in which children will sort out items made out of paper, plastic and aluminum, etc. We will watch an educational video about relying and reusing everyday household items. The emphasis will be on taking care of our planet, by throwing away trash inside garbage cans and recycling frequently. We will read and discuss strategies to further beautify our neighborhood and mother earth! In addition, children will participate in weather observations during the Spring Equinox and celebrate the life of Cesar Chavez---Si Se Puede (yes it can happen, or yes you can do it)! We want to instill in our children that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to!
Moreover, students will participate in daily Language Arts and Mathematics activities that incorporate the letter, shape, color and number of the week.
LESSON PLAN
Week of March 2—Students will finish thank you cards and begin readings about the city of Oakland (neighborhood). The children will participate in various activities and exercises that incorporate the color, shape, number and letter of the week (Jj, turquoise, star, #10).
Week of March 9—Students will continue their exploration of their neighborhood by looking at pictures of Oakland and maps, in preparation for the neighborhood art project (i.e. favorite place in Oakland recycling model). The children will participate in various activities and exercises that incorporate the color, shape, number and letter of the week (Kk, fuchsia, heart, #11).
